About York

York, or Jorvik from Viking tradition, is located in the central part of England, midway between London and Edinburgh and is bordered by the Rivers Ouse and Foss. Ancient peoples lived in the area from around 8000 BC but the Romans established the territory in 71 AD. The Angles took over the area in 415 AD and then the Vikings in 866 AD. The Normans conquered the city in the 13th century and officially became known as York.

As early as the Roman occupation, walls were constructed around the city for security. The walls have been reinforced and rebuilt with the original main entrance to the city accessible from the Mickelgate Bar. The historic city retains narrow cobblestone streets lined with medieval buildings now transformed into modern stores. Points of interest range from ancient ruins to the home and surgery of beloved world famous veterinarian and author James Herriot.

The Aldborough Roman Site contains a museum that houses relics from the ancient civilization. Very little visible evidence remains of the original fortress, but 3 intricately designed mosaic pieces are carefully preserved and protected. Byland Abbey is the remains of a 12th century monastery and village that was once one of the finest churches in Europe. Clifford’s Tower was first constructed of wood during the 11th century, and after having been damaged numerous times by fire, was ordered by Henry VIII to be rebuilt with stone. The fortress was a stronghold for many medieval kings over the centuries.

Castle Howard is an 18th century estate that has been home to the Howard family for over 300 years. The structure is located on 1000 acres of woodland, carefully manicured gardens, water features and a children‘s playground. The castle welcomes visitors daily and includes a butchery, delicatessen, plant nursery, museum and café. York has a multitude of museums waiting to be explored that display cultural, archaeological and modern history.

The Jorvik Viking Centre recreates the Norse town that was discovered under the present city of York. Artifacts from the dig site are incorporated into the exhibits to display life in the ancient community. The National Railway Museum contains 300 years of railroad history. Visitors observe trains from days past to designs of the future. The World of James Herriot offers guests the opportunity to tour the home and surgery of the famous author and veterinarian. The site provides a glimpse into the life of a rural vet and includes a veterinary museum.
